Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road links.

Chelmsford is positioned near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
