The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community that developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry shut down, all the same it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, for the most part because of its proximity to London, and its first rate rail and road communications.
