The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
