An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, plus the first rate rail and road links.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
