Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the settlement that developed surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, largely because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the good rail and road links.
