Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the first class rail and road links.

Chelmsford is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
