The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of around thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, largely due to its closeness to the capital, plus its terrific road and rail communications.
