The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of around thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
