Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the village which expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, nevertheless it is still a thriving and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
