Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its production facilities went bust, all the same it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its closeness to London, plus the good rail and road communications.
