Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, in spite of this it continues to be a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, and its first class road and rail links.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
