Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road connections.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
