The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the village which developed in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its plants closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, and the superb road and rail connections.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
