The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to London, and the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
