Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of about 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were later put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry went bust, nevertheless it remains a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
