River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry closed down, in spite of this it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to the closeness to London, plus the first class road and rail communications.
