Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry went bust, although it still is a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its closeness to London, plus its first class rail and road links.

Chelmsford can be found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
