Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that evolved in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless supposed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the 1980's, when much of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its closeness to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road communications.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
