Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry shut down, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail links.
