Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of approximately thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
