The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the community which evolved in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the capital, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
