Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
