Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the town which expanded around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, since much of its industries closed down, although it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to London, plus its excellent road and rail communications.
