Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and booming town today, principally due to its nearness to London, and the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
