The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the commune which evolved around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to the nearness to the capital, and its good rail and road connections.
