The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless presumed witches.
