Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of approximately 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement that developed surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many presumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed down, in spite of this it is still a successful and growing town today, largely due to its closeness to the capital, and its quality rail and road communications.

The town is located near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
