Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a vital manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its manufacturing plants closed, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road links.
