River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed, although it still is a successful and growing town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road connections.
