Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th C, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, when much of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford lies close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London.
