Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of around 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed witches.
