River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community which grew up in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industrial facilities closed down, although it remains a successful and growing town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its good road and rail communications.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
