The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement which expanded in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road links.

Chelmsford can be found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
