River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune which developed surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, as much of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the capital, plus the first rate rail and road communications.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
