Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which developed around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mainly because of its proximity to the capital, and its good rail and road links.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
