A Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to its close proximity to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.
