River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, though it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, and the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
