An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry closed, all the same it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly because of its proximity to London, plus its superb rail and road links.
