The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
