The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings.
