The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, but it still is a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its proximity to London, and the excellent rail and road links.

The town is situated just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
