The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of about thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which evolved in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, even so it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mainly because of its nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail links.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
