The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of about thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the town which developed in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, making products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its production facilities went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
