The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its factories went bust, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the good road and rail links.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
