An Anglo Saxon community superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th C, making goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, and the first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
