The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town that evolved in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town during the 19th century, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it still is a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
