The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of approximately 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industrial facilities shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
