An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a vital manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail communications.
