The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road connections.
