Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of about thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which developed round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a serious industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry closed, however it continues to be a successful and growing town today, principally because of its nearness to London, and the exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is positioned close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
