Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the town that developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, and its first rate road and rail communications.

The town sits near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
