The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, although it is still a flourishing and developing town today, principally due to the proximity to the capital, plus the first class rail and road connections.

The town is found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
