Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the commune which evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were later executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, and the first class rail and road links.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
