Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and developing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road connections.
