The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the village which evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail connections.
