Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that expanded around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its production facilities closed down, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, principally due to the nearness to London, plus the superb rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
