River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, principally due to its closeness to the capital, plus its good rail and road links.
