Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its plants closed, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part due to its nearness to London, and its first class rail and road links.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
