River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its production facilities closed down, though it still is a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the closeness to the capital, and its first rate rail and road communications.
