The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
