The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the village which expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were later hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the proximity to London, plus the good rail and road connections.
