Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, and its first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
