River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the community which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, and the superb rail and road communications.
