Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.
