Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of about 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, and the terrific road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
