The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry closed, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
