The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town which expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
