Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.
