Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that expanded round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its superb rail and road links.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
