The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were later executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, plus the outstanding road and rail links.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
