Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of about thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many alleged witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, making products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry shut down, nonetheless it is still a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to the nearness to the city of london, and the terrific rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
