Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune that developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, making goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its manufacturers went bust, in spite of this it is still a successful and growing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
