Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which developed surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
