Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its production facilities closed, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road communications.
