The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize.
