The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the village that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry went bust, although it still is a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the capital, plus the quality rail and road communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
