The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that developed round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many supposed witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its factories went bust, in spite of this it still is a thriving and booming town today, principally due to its nearness to the capital, and its first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
