Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment that evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road communications.

The town is found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
