River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a vital manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, when much of its industrial facilities closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to London, and its good rail and road connections.

The town is situated near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
