Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of around 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

A Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
