The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a significant manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, and the exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
