The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the village that evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its plants closed down, yet it continues to be a successful and booming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to London, plus the first class rail and road communications.
