The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the encampment that expanded surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, and the terrific rail and road connections.
