The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry closed, but it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.
