The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its factories closed, but it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its quality rail and road communications.

The town is found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
