The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has got a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community which evolved around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its factories shut down, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely because of its closeness to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
