Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the encampment which evolved round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, yet it still is a thriving and growing town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the capital, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
