Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industrial facilities went bust, in spite of this it still is a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to its closeness to London, and the quality road and rail communications.
