Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, making such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail links.

The town is found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
