Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, mainly because of its closeness to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail links.
