A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, all the same it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to the nearness to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail links.
