Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of roughly 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town which evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its plants closed down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its closeness to London, and its excellent rail and road communications.

The town lies close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
