The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of around thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune which developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, largely because of its closeness to London, and the outstanding rail and road links.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
