The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, since much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
