The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the commune which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
