River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities went bust, in spite of this it remains a successful and booming town today, mostly because of its closeness to the capital, plus the good road and rail links.
