The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the village which grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to London, plus the superb rail and road communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
