The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize.
