The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its factories shut down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to its nearness to the capital, plus its quality rail and road links.
