The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune that grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, when much of its factories closed, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the capital, and its excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
