The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 miles from central London. The town has a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, making products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its plants shut down, all the same it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.
