River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the village which developed in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it still is a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
