Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its quality rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
