Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its plants went bust, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, plus the quality rail and road connections.
