Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of about 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, making such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry closed, nonetheless it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to the proximity to London, plus the outstanding rail and road links.
