The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were later put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
