Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town which evolved surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were subsequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, and the superb road and rail links.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 miles from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
