Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of around thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its plants closed down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road communications.

The town is found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
