The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune which developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, plus the quality road and rail connections.

Chelmsford can be found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
