The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the community that grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry went bust, yet it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
