Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and growing town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, and its good rail and road links.

The town lies near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
