Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities shut down, although it still is a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road connections.
