The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,500 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the quality rail and road communications.
