Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its plants went bust, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail communications.
