The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the town which grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to London, plus its first class rail and road communications.
