Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its manufacturers shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, plus the first class rail and road links.
