A Saxon community followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry closed, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town is located near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
