River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement which expanded in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, as much of its plants closed, yet it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the capital, plus the first rate rail and road connections.
