The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were consequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.
