Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

A Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to London, and the good road and rail communications.
