The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry went bust, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its nearness to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is situated near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
